Im planning to get my car wetsanded, compounded, and polished to take out minor scratches and swirls. Who would you guys recommend and how much should I expect to pay?

you can wetsand yourself.

What you need: sanding block, 2000 grit wet sandpaper, rotary buffer, foam cutting pad, foam polishing pad, compound strong enough to take out sanding marks, polish, and paint sealant/wax.

Wash the panel with Dawn dish soap to strip off the wax.. Attach sandpaper to sanding block. Get a garden hose or spray bottle and soak both the panel you're going to wetsand AND the sandpaper. While keeping the panel wet, lightly start sanding side to side. Make sure you keep even pressure and do not hit edges/corners/etc. Every so often, dry the part you were sanding and check to see your progress. The orange peel texture gets very noticable when the panel is sanded...once that fades away is when you are done with that area. However, it is very easy to let the clear coat go too thin or possibly go all the way thru. You have to use your own judgment on how deep you should go..

Once you're done sanding, attach the foam cutting pad to the buffer and start buffing at 1000-1300 rpms using a finecut-mediumcut compound. Make sure not to let the buffer stop in one area or you will burn the paint off. Again, stay away from corners/edges/etc.Check prgress in flouresant lights, or sunlight. When sanding marks are gone, move onto using polish with the foam polishing pad to remove the buffer marks bring out some more shine in the paint. When you're don with that, you can either use a really light polish to bring out more color and shine, or jsut move straight to wax.

Obviously, it's best to learn on a pos car in case you mess up...

thanks nick. I know how to wetsand a car but the hardest part is buffing it out with compound with a rotary buffer. If ur not skilled with it, you can easly burn through the clear coat. Rather than take the risk of messing up and spend money on the buffer, I might as well pay someone else who is more qualified to do it

Hang tight. I know a guy in huntington but let me verify if he does wet sanding. He's a prof detailer he taught me how to wet sand but I dont know if he provides that service (liability issues may have him a bit gun shy about it).

Meguiars has a detail shop in Lake Forest.
MEGUIARS
22512 ASPAN STREET, LAKE FOREST, CA 92630
Phone: (949) 855-7893

I would call them and see if they can help you out. I have seen some of the cars that come out of there and they do a really good job.

Just as a thought, he doesn't do wet sanding for anyone but his more long term customers.
