Kappo Honda is great, but it's not really in Irvine! I love their yakitori though, it's a fantastic place to go and drink with your friends. They have a real charcoal grill inside, and you just mark what you want on a slip of paper and the waitress brings it to you. The asparagus is great, as are the chicken hearts, IMHO.
I love Taiko in Irvine, on the corner of Jeffrey and Walnut, near the 5 freeway. Probably the best japanese in Irvine, excellent tasting sushi (the yellowtail is great, as is the seafood salad), and their cooked stuff is good too! Just get there early to get a table, the wait can be very long! Once we waited 2.5 hrs to get in at the sushi bar. OK, we didn't wait, my mom stayed there and waited, we came back 2 hrs. later.
Fuji-Kan at Walnut and Culver is OK too. They do an all u can eat thing on Sundays and another day of the week that's a good deal. otherwise, it's nothing to write home about.

We wound up at Taiko. We'd been there long time ago and I rememebred it once we drove into that pitiful experince of a parking lot. It was WAAAYYYY to small to accomodate peak hours parking and we drove through several times before a space opened up. As for the food: The sashimi was quite good. Our guests owned a fish market/deli and are familiar with fish. The hot stuff...okay IMO. Overall for the $$ paid, a pretty good deal.
Saw a lowered silver gen 2 GS4 parked on one of the end caps (make a space). Dunno what wheels they were, reminded me of a Brabus style.

Yeah that parking lot is terrible! Especially once they opened up the Chinese seafood place on the corner, that one gets lots of traffic. Sometimes I have to park by the Wienerschnitzel
Glad you had fun with your guests!

Anyone know any other good joints in Irvine? I'm looking for lunch places. I'm looking for sushi, tacos, hamburgers, steak, and korean - cheap eats or expensive doesn't matter as long as it's good food. In Irvine only please, and they must be open for lunch. TIA.

I work at UC Irvine, and one of my favorite places for lunch is the Whole Foods Supermarket at Culver/Michelson. I know, it's strange to have lunch in the supermarket, but they have a small food court in there that's just too much fun! They have persian food, greek gyros, a huge salad bar, then also italian, chinese, etc (never tried those yet).
The prices are reasonable, and the food was very tasty. The market also has some very exotic and hard to find foods, so you can shop afterwards.

I know this thread is a little old, but I thought I'd contribute anyway.
One of my favorite restaurants in Orange County is Kitayama. It's in Newport Beach, really easy to get to and right off the 405/73 freeways.
This place is a little pricier than Taiko, but the atmosphere is 10 times nicer. It's like comparing a Daihatsu to a Lexus. The service is outstanding and the presentation is awesome.

My girlfriend and I take our out of town guests there for dinner and everyone is usually impressed.
