Default Nitrous oxide Level

hi,

My friend recently bought a nissan nx, while it was going the emissions test here in california it didnt pass due to a high N20 level....anyone have any ideas on how i can reduce that number.....supposively a high octane number would burn slower thus...allow less n20 to be released due to the lower temperature in the car....?....i mite be wrong...but does anyone have a idea on how i can reduce this number?....any help would be nice///

You might want to try posting this question also in the maintance forum. More of the experts hang out there.

usually start with replacing things like egr valves. on many older cars, that's enough to lower the nox number. how much does it need to be reduced by?
if it only needs to be lowered a little bit, that should do the trick. if it's WAY off/gross polluter, there's other problems that need to be addressed....timing, plugs, ig wires......

Funny how you mentioned it because I just smog checked my mom's car today (and 2 weeks ago). She has a 1993 Toyota Camry V6 LE

2 weeks ago, it failed because the NOx was too high, something like a whoopin' 1200 or so. Replaced the EGR valve, but left the EGR modulator alone. Re-ran it this morning and it failed. The guy at the smog place pumped air into the EGR, and I guess that cleared out the modulator next to it. Ran the car again and it passed instantly. Turns out, it's most likely the EGR modulator that was gone.

Usually (but not all the time), NOx is due to the EGR system. If the EGR system doesn't function properly, youe exhaust can be hot enough that NOx forms. The EGR is there to prevent NOx from forming (due to exceeding temperature).

BTW, where did you smog at?

Or just drop it off at a ghetto smog shop for a day or two and leave one or two 100 dollar bills in the ashtray
