Default Insurance coverage

An insurance question for you guys...
We have 5 cars and 5 drivers and we're currently getting raped by AAA, $4700/year and only full coverage on the ES350. Can we put the head of household, my mom and dad, on the policy, along with the 5 cars and leave me, my sister, and my uncle out of it? Will the 3 unlisted people be covered in accidents even though we're not on the policy?

driver's are insured in the cars that they drive. thus, if you have insurance coverage and are driving a rental car, you're covered. though the rental car company may have insurance on the car, that insurance is not extended to you.

as such, if you're not on the policy, you are not covered in an accident. the car itself may be covered (depending on the policy), and the other party will be compensated, but you could be sued and the insurance company would not cover you as you would not be a policy holder for them.

so, yes, your parents can leave you off the policy.
but no, unlisted people will not be covered in the event of an accident.

btw, less than 5k per year for 5 drivers on 5 cars isn't bad.. it's $83 & change per driver per car per month...

Well the only car with full coverage is the ES350, so all the othere are just PLPD, so it is pretty bad imo.

So if the unlisted people got into an accident, any damage to the car would be covered but no medical/litigation expenses will?

If people living in your household are excluded from the policy, and if you are one of those listed excluded drivers (resident and relative of that address) and you get into a collision or loss with the listed vehicle, your claim will not be paid out and be denied. Yes that is correct.

BTW, i'm a claims rep for the company you mentioned.

"Excluded" means that it's stated on the policy, something like "The following drivers are excluded from any coverage: " correct? Or does "excluded" mean anybody who is not on the policy?

First part is correct. Lets say for example that you don't list as an excluded driver, but you still live at home with your parents and still drive the car from time to time. If you do get involved in a loss, it is up to the claims adjuster handling the file to see if your loss would be paid out. It's not a good idea to do this because when it comes time for renewal, your policy is subject to review at that point in time.

Ok, thanks. So basically, any coverage for a car driven by somebody not on the policy would be up to the adjuster? Guess we'll have to shop around now, the good student and driver discounts and AAA home insurance discount don't seem to be helping us out that much.

It would be pending review of an adjuster. But to be honest, this isn't just an Auto Club thing, they are rules regulated by the CA Dept. of Insurance unfortunately.

PM me if you have questions.

Alot things goes into the car insurance premium. To name a few is how long you been driving, sex, single/married, your driving record, value of your cars, coverages on each vehicle and miles driven on each vehicle.
