Default Blacked out tails legal in SoCal?

wwwasssuuuupppppp......

I thinking about blacking out the tails like JRok did in the thread below...

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=222552

with all of the ridiculous laws in Cali it wouldn't suprise me if this is illegal here.....

anyone confirm if it is or not???.....I live in OC and have seen a ton of new BMWs with this same look.....the last thing I need is to get pulled over for tails and then asked to pop the hood....

Yup, technically it is a non-no. Has to do with interfering with the proepr operation of a lighting device. Much the same as when some folks get cited for having window tint that reduces the visibility of the high mount stop.

I could be wrong, but it might be a federal thing, not just a state law. The fed (DOT) governs things such as lighting and the requirements around them, including the color of lights.

Guys, if you go to pepboys/autozone and look at the tinted tail light covers for the suv's, camaro's, mustangs, etc, some of the boxes say for off road use only. In cali, your gambling doing that mod. If you do a spray tint with some thin coats that shows some red, you may not get harassed by CHP. Go jet black and you may have problems.

Now, I've seen both the BMW 6 & 7 series do the rear taillight tint and MB SL 500 also. It looks sick...

It's illegal to put any film or spray on the taillights of any car registered in CA. Just to disspell some of the myths mentioned above...

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

It's a violation of VC Section 24600:

Thanks Ryan!

Enough of the ones listed, I learned the hard way.
