How do you sell your car privately in SOCAL?
#16
I sold 3 cars in the last 3 years, so I'm beginning to get the hang of it. Although none of my cars were high end, i think you'll find some similarities in tactics. I sold a 91 Camary for $2200, a 92 Maxima for $3150, and a 96 Miata for $3000. All cash transactions. Each took a week to sell via Craigslist, and we met at a public parking lot across from the Glendale College. It's highly visable, so you wont get mugged by a stranger. I think a weekend morning would be perfect, tho I did one during a weekday evening. I think I'm lucky that no wierdos answered the ads. It's all serious buyers. I turned down 2 people because they wanted to lowball on the 1st day of the ad. The gas tank should be almost empty cus you are selling the car not the expensive gas. Since you are selling an expensive vehicle, you should seriously count the cash if it's an all cash transaction. My cousin got ripped off one time when she sold something expensive to a Russian dude who magically turned a stack of $100 bills into $1 bills by the time the stack entered her purse. Magicians do commit crimes i guess. Also be careful about accepting cashiers checks... they can be phony as well! Take the buyer to the bank to verify the authenticity of the cashier's check. If he is paying by check, just take the buyer to the issuing bank and cash it right there. I highly recommend selling versus trading in. You do get a lot more money, and it's really no trouble at all. Easy.
