Default Car Canopy for driveways, ILLEGAL?

Hi CL, I hope everyone's doing well.

I live in SoCal and figured someone here would know. I want to put a car canopy on my driveway hoping to stop or prevent some of the dust and dirt attaching to my black car. My main concern if whether it's legal or not to have this in the driveway?

I'm thinking of something like this:

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

That's where the problems lies, it will be in plain sight. I'm not really worried about the neighbors complaining since I don't live in a neighborhood where people care much about that. It's the law that i'm worried about, I just don't want to be fined or something.

Code enforcement in my city will have a green correction tag hanging on the door in no time. Call your local city hall and ask the code enforcement section what is permissible. I suspect not but some city's are not strict.

^^^ Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try and give them a call. What city in CA do you live in if you don't mind me asking?

yeah definitely call and ask, and if you are in a community, make sure you ask the HOA too. they are usually the most painful

yes, check w/ your local city hall - planning/bldg & safety
besides the aesthetics, the other potential problem is fire from a building code perspective; a lot will have to do with how close this canopy is to your property line and your local city's planning/zoning req'ts.
good luck...

If it's in front of your house then most likely you will get cited. If you place it on a huge yard behind your house most likely you're ok

if you have HOA, then it is I think if you call the city they will also tell you no. I would just do it and hope no one calls it in

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definitely try and contact my local city hall and hope that it's allowed in my city. Appreciate all the help.

I don't think it is illegal. If you have a home owners association.

For me personally I wouldnt be caught dead with a canopy on my driveway. Doesn't look good at all. It makes your neighborhood look cheap and I'm sure my neighbors wouldnt like it either.

Depends how nice your neighborhood is though if you can get away with it.

I would but the risk of having more swirl marks due to winds on a black car just doesn't justify it. Since this is also my daily car, it's a hassle to take off and put on everyday, especially since it's getting colder here. Removing and putting on the car cover also increases the chances of swirls marks.

I think I can get away with it, no problem there. My neighborhood doesn't have a HOA but it looks decent. However, there are houses with broken down boats and RV's on their driveway or parked on the streets. So I don't think most people in my neighborhood worry about the looks much or else it would have been reported already.
