Default Crap...I can't open my oil drain plug...help..

i've been changing oil by myself, but somehow i can't open the oil drain plug at this time....it's freaking tight. I'm the one who tight it last time, but never thought it would be this tight.

i'm using regular socket wrench...like this

is there any other tool to open it ? should i get the one with LONGERRR handle socket wrench ? is there any autoshop around OC where i can bring my own oil + filter and pay them to open the drain, refill the oil ?

Shock the bolt by banging on it. If it still won't budge, carefully use a propane torch and heat the area around the bolt to expand it.

If that doesn't work, let the dealer do it.

just try using a breaker bar or as frotiss explained, put a piece of 2-3 foot pipe over the socket to give you more leverage.

ive NEVER met a bolt i couldnt (eventually) open

also, if its rusted on or whatever spray it down with PB blaster a couple hours before trying again, its a trick i normally use on suspension bolts but it should help

LIke everyone above says, pipe over the ratchet to extend the length and give it more leverage may do the trick. There's been countless times where this method saved me from so much frustration of loosening a tight bolt.

+2 for shocking the bolt loose, it's safer than using the leverage technique as there is less chance of damaging the socket and bolt. Just fit the socket over the bolt, and then smack the handle of the wrench with a closed fist or a rubber mallet a until the bolt snaps loose. Always works for me.

This is a good method that I have used before for getting those brake caliper bracket bolts off. Only problem I see doing this on the oil drain plug is the lack of room under there unless its on a lift.

I think unit74 means to hit the bolt itself without a socket on it to shock it loose. This may work as it should break loose any stubborn liquid/material that has hardened around the bolt itself.

Also, I'm sure any shop that changes oil will put in your own oil/filter instead of theirs. It should even be a bit cheaper since they are not charging you for parts.

it shouldnt matter, your supposed to drain the car while the engine is at or near running temp since thats when the oil is at its lowest viscosity.
