Last time I got pulled over and got my hood pop it cost me $880 in bail. That is just for an intake. I have engine swap but the cop didn't know and he gave me a gross polluter infraction.
I had seen a couple of these last year. Had some old cars and modded Camaros and such pulled over... this was in LA area. I made sure to warn a few buddies of mine. Havent seen recently though. good to know they are voluntary. Not that I have anything to worry about...
So if a cop goes, "Sir you mind if we put your car through our on site smog test really quick?" And you say "No.", wouldn't that make them kind of question your car after? Plus he can still ask you to pop your hood and let the pencil screwing begin.
