I think the enthusiasm for the GS and IS mainly are the fact that they are RWD sedans that produce great power and are fun to drive. The ES with light suspension mods can be fun to drive on the freeway, but not as fun in the twisties. Unfortunately the ES is FWD and is nose heavy. It's definitely not as fun especially with torque steer and heavy under steer when you're carving through corners.
I previously had a FWD Toyota Solara SE V6 which was manual. Obviously a chassis-mate of the ES300, it was nice and fast in the straight line for it's time, but it was just simply a boat of a car to drive...even with an upgraded suspension (springs/shocks & sways). I went from that to a new 04 IS300, then to my current 07 GS350.
There is more aftermarket support for the GS, IS and LS simply because they're generally more appealing to drive and modify. The ES certainly isn't lacking love here at CL, it's just a vehicle that has a different target audience and appeal.
