I see a lot of cell phone repair places popping up... there are several near my house. Maybe open up a phone book or yellowpages.com.

do you have the 2g or 3g.... if its not a unlocked phone.... what you do is:
:
turn it off
turn on itunes
then hlod down the home button and plug in usb cable to iphone, dont let go of button till you get a picture of a usb cable on the screen.... at that point itunes should see the phone in rocvery mode and prompt you to install the firmware again, or just click restore

It needs to be put into DFU mode, NOT recovery mode (there is a difference).

The link should be helpful. I have unbricked my ipod touch using the same method numerous times.

AFAIK, DFU can bring back almost any iphone. Make sure the screen stays black.
