Driving route; L.A. to Carmel, CA
hello peoples. i'm going up to carmel in a week and was wondering what rout you have driven to get to the area. it's pretty much the 5 or the 101, but wanted to put the question out there. thanks!
additional info: i'll be leaving on a friday morning at 3A.M. - so scenery shouldn't matter, speed traps do.

driving at 3am, you should get radar regardless
101 is "easier" but probably a longer route. last time we drove to monterey, we did 5 and then i think 46, then 101. 46 is one lane so if there is a truck, it might be a bit pain until you pass them
traps they could be everywhere. couple spots on 5 like grapevine are common, on 101 it's pretty random

Get a radar detector.
101 is more comfortable with plenty of places to stop in case you need a break. Yes, it takes about an hour longer compared to using the 5, but at least you'll actually enjoy the ride, rather than trudge through it.
I recommend stopping at Pismo Beach for some great clam chowder.
Nate, what's at Carmel?

last time we started around 6pm from LA, and i think we hit 46 around 7:30pm. we had radar on and hit 2 speed traps (those a$$ chp). iirc it was 1 lane each way for most of it. some areas it's dotted line so we could pass, but some were solid. and we did have to floor to pass coz' of oncoming traffic.

I'd take 101...far more stuff to stop and do if you choose. I-5 is ZZZ unless you are making a "run". Even that can be boring. Clam chowder at Splash in Pismo is You can also stop by San Luis Obispo for a variety of eats.
Paso Robles for a wine run...
5...ugh. I always dread that drive even if it is faster.
