In addition Philippes on Alameda and Ord in downtown LA (near China Town)has the best french dips, very old school.
Then on to Ghetto BBQ at Woody's on the corner of LaBrea and Market, outstanding
i saw philippes being highlighted during a televised USC game as part of the "taste of the town" segment. it looked good...

lucille's bbq (all over town) is a good sit-down bbq joint. there's also one up figueroa north of downtown LA that's kinda ghetto-ish - i think it's called "king's bbq"? it's also good.

when the cerritos guppy house first opened, the shaved ice used to be ginormous.

now it's half the size for 1.5x the price.

For $30 per person (I think), you get to choose two appetizers, two salads, two pastas, two main (meat) dishes, and two desserts from a special menu. It's served family style, but if you want a refill of anything, they'll do it (hence the all-you-can-eat). Special items cost extra, but still unlimited refills. And you can take the leftovers to go!!!

I think you need a minimum of four people, but if you're charming, you can convince the server to do the family style meal for two people only. I've done it, and I gorged myself on a ten-course meal with my ex-girlfriend.

The one I go to is in Costa Mesa right by South Coast Plaza.

MAGGIANO's!!

AGREED.. and their portions are Friggin huge any how ......
PLUS THEIR Fried Zucchini app. IS absolutely the best i have ever had.. & ya gotta ask for extra dipping sauce....

As for Hiuge portions ... not seen all the posts but

ClaimJumpers always had HUGE portions ... they have gotten a touch smaller in the last 2 + years or so... but still it is a big *** plate of food + all the extras etc...

Bucca di Beppo ALso has Huge portions of Italian food every time i have been there it has been pretty darn good...

Great thread!!!

Galios for subs and Chronic Taco for burritos in newport (not cdm)

Both are good but they arent the greatest prices for the portions.

The pastrami is good at The Hat, problem is if the pastrami has been out for a while or you get the bottom pieced...it tests like left overs.

i prefer Albertaco's in Mission Viejo mainly because it tastes better than alerto's and it doesn't drip grease like the food is giving birth there

Yoshinoya in Rowland Heights is good, if and only if you stay away from the clam chowder . A few of my friends ate it and they all seemed to have stomach issues afterwards.
