Default Interesting info i found out about motor swaps in California

Im not sure how many people know this, or if im the only one who didnt haha. but either way i found it interesting.

I was talking with a state referee last night and was talking to him about a few things regarding motor swaps. now he said they are legal in California as long as you get them emissions tested at a referee station. i already knew that, but he also said that.

If the motor you're putting in was made before your car was made. then its already illegal. so if you have a 1996 SC300 lets say and you drop in a 1995 GTE motor its illegal already, even if it passes emissions. California apparently says older is bad, newer is good.

Yea not sure if i was the only one who didnt know this...but just giving everyone a heads up

<table border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="4" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td>Engine Changes</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:</td> </tr> <tr> <td>
  • The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
  • The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
  • If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
  • All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

Yea I remember this info from my Honda days lol. Although, I still don't think you can legally have a GTE motor swapped into your Lexus in CA.

Good info man. Now, how would you prove to them that the motor is newer? And how would they find out if it not? And if I can only pass emission.

Yea and I believe you need paperwork from the shop/mechanic to prove that the motor is newer and not stolen or something.

knew it too, but i do know a lot of people that dont.
just pick up a old, old school car like the 1970 240z and put a monstrous motor in it, they dont need smog so technically legal =)
