Default Importing car into CA and emissions requirements

I'm thinking of buying a car out of state (Cayman S). I was wondering if there are any emissions requirements for California I need to be worried about. Thanks.

it just has to have all the emissions equipment that came with the car on it ex. cats, egr, intake, etc on it that meets the fed requirements for smog and pass the sniffer.

It's new and in stock form. So do I have to take it some where to get it tested still?

Would you happen to know how much of a penalty I'd be looking at? (Ballpark is fine)

BTW, how do they handle taxes. Would I pay the taxes in the state I buy it in or CA taxes?

honestly I don't know ballpark is hard as I stopped doing smogs about 3 years ago and went straight to doing mods to supra's and lexus's the taxes you pay are from the state it came from the penalty if i remember right is when you reg the car here if anything I can look it up for you but you can always google or bing the ca dmv and check their site which
may answer your questions

Madoka,

ALL Federal US vehicles will/should pass local Ca emission requirements...Gray market Euro spec vehicles is another story.
You will have to pay local Ca tax in the DMV.

*US spec Cayman S will pass smog in ALL US states.

i bought my car from a guy in the airforce, he lived in CA but his car was registered in TX still due to some reason.

anyway i didn't notice a penalty. it wasn't that bad to register it after i bought it. and i didn't have to re smog it because its still a new enough car

I don't know what DMW penalty you're talking about, but DMV got sued for around $20M a few years ago, had to pay back to whoever registered for the out-of-state cars, and each person in that class action law suit got about $300 back. Since then, the CA DMW had dropped that penalty when you register your out-of-state car. The best way is to call the DMW and find out for current regulation.
