My GS300 just died, need advice and a good mechanic!
Hi - I have a 98 GS300 and it just suddenly died while I was driving down the street! First I noticed it wasn't really going into gear, and the dial on the gauge on the left was jumping around and then it just sorta... died. I managed to start it up once so I could park it on the side of the road, but I couldn't start it after that. And the engine light came on and I think some other lights too.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be? And also -- does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Hollywood area??
Lastly, if it's something like the transmission that needs to be fixed would it be better to just cut my losses and get a new car?
Thanks!

hey socalgirl, sorry this had to happen. id say keep the car if you absolutely love it, but repairs and parts, especially for an older lexus, won't be cheap. if the repairs get too high in cost, then personally, id part with the car. it just doesn't seem worth the time and money IMO if it requires repair after repair, as the case with many cars. we had a similar problem with our old ES 300 ('92). i loved that car. it went through an accident, multiple exterior and electrical repairs, but the last straw was it needing a new oil pump. costly, time consuming, and frankly, unnecessary. it might cost a lot for a new or even pre-owned car, but safety and peace of mind knowing that the car wasn't going to fail on me were the only factors i thought of when debating whether i should dump the once old reliable ride.
best of luck girl!

Your problem seems like it could be many different things. I think you need to get your car scanned with an OBD2 scantool which will be able to help steer you in the right direction as to the cause of the problem. There are some members that have a scan tool maybe can help you out.
Good Luck!
My first GS was a 99 GS300, and it was great! Sold it with over 180k and it was still going smooth.
