Someone stole my friend Matter White M6. *Recovered*

Yeh its when thieves use Vin tags, License plates, etc off a similar not-stolen car and put them on a stolen car to be able to drive it around. I'm guessing mostly so they can get it across borders without issues.

cloning is a technique used on stolen, mostly high value vehicles (usually stock vehicles that don't stick out from others of the same model). the thieves find a wrecked car of the same model that through some loophole has been destroyed but still has a clean title, and either steal the vin plates off it or create new vin plates and paperwork using the stolen vin and replace the actual vin plates on the car they stole. this way they can sell the car legitimately in the country or bypass shipping requirements/border requirements to take the car to an export market where it is usually worth multiples of what it is here.
not easy, and not cheap, hence it's usually only used by pros part of large vehicle theft rings.

With the BMW's (at least with both my buddies 335i's) as long as you take the key fob out, even if you leave the car running...if someone hops in the car and tries to shift it out of park, the moment their foot touches the brake without the key fob being detected, the car dies. Something i wish our Lexii had!!
But if someone stole it right off the driveway, its more likely its just a joyrider than a professional thief.
I know on a couple of occasions i've left my car idling in my driveway to run in and get something i forgot. Won't be doing that again!!
