Mount San Gorgonio 11,503' "Old Greyback" is the tallest mountain in Southern California. This Sunday , anyone ? 18 miles round trip almost same with mount Baldy.
About 8 to 10 hrs depend on the breath taken views, lakes, water falls . All warm up and ready for Mount Whitney 14,505 feet, highest peak in the low 48 states
When you apply for the Whitney permit lottery, you can put down several dates and you will most likely get at least one of the dates. If you apply for only one date, it might be tough to get a permit. The trail is only open from May 1st - November 1st so you're pretty much out of luck for this year. The lottery system opens February 15th every year. You have a better chance if you are going to day hike it because they allow more day hikers on the trail than overnighters. Also, you have to snail mail the permit application in. They don't let you fax it to them. Even with limiting the trail to people with permits, the trail still seems crowded, so I'm glad the rangers are enforcing the permits on trail.
The hike is definitely worth it and you get to experience using a "wag bag". I recommend doing it in 3 days spending both nights at Trail Camp. I'll be doing it again next year for the 4th time, but this time I'm going over trail crest and exiting at Kearsarge Pass/Onion Valley for a 5 day hike.
