yes, it's pretty necessary. even though the ballasts only pull a 3-4 amp draw during normal operation, the startup amperage is still a little high at 8-10amps.
this is just the norm for japanese import cars, some customers with vehicle that use lower gauge wire can get by without a harness.
either way, it's always recommended to use a harness when you're adding something aftermarket. likewise - you wouldn't want to add an aftermarket amplifier w/o running a cable to the battery.

Cliffud, you had two links posted for buying the HIds one for CL and one for the 2is. whats the difference between the kits? and is it possible to get a slim kit where i don't need the wiring harness but direct plug and play for the Fogs. looking to go 4300K to match stock, want to go whiter but i like the output of being able to see.
