Default 2011 - Rattling inside the license plate light housing

Something is rattling around in here and I cant figure out what it is or how to get to it. I can hear it each time I lift or close the hatchback gate

It's on both sides. I know how to pop off the panel on the backside of the hatchback but that only lets you change the bulb. This is inside the actual light housing. Does anyone know how to get in there to try to find out what makes the noise?

What kind of bulbs do those take? Are they built-in LED or normal bulbs? Did you put LEDs or some different bulb in? The lights themselves can be removed by removing the painted external hatch door piece surrounding them. If you remove them and take out the bulbs to expose an opening, you can dump out what is inside. I wonder if those are aftermarket LED bulbs installed, and the bulbs had some caps that eventually fell off.

Turns out you were 100% right on your guess. They were LEDs in there for some reason and the noise was from caps that had fallen off. The caps arent needed to function, right? I kept them off. Also not like they have been on there for the past few months anyway.

I took a metal skewer and put a bunch of duct tape on the tip and bent it in to the opening. After some shaking and wiggling around I was able to get it to stick on the tape and pulled it out.

Passenger side light went back in easily. Drivers side was an absolute pain, I was ready to give up, had to get someone with smaller hands to be able to get in there and put it back, what a tight design they have!

Awesome! Thanks for the update. I'm glad that my idea wasn't far off and that you were able to get them out. Those caps aren't needed at all, they are to help diffuse the LED in more directions, but the lights already point down at the plate just fine. The diffusers aren't needed in that application. So you're good to go now!
