I think Toyota is looking to go after the mini coopers success and create its own compact premium car. Before the Mini this term made no sense

Lexus is all set to debut a new compact concept at next month’s 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show; but will we ever see this compact BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 rival on the stateside? According to sources at Toyota, Lexus may roll out the competitor to popular entry-level luxury models sooner than expected.
According to Automotive News, insiders at Toyota said that Lexus will develop a new compact for Europe and could sell it in the United States by 2012.
“You are going to see more products start coming under models like the Lexus IS,” said Erich Merkle, president at Autoconomy.com, an online auto newsletter. He said that luxury-car buyers are now on fixed incomes and may want to spend less for their daily drivers.
Rumors has it that the 5-door Lexus compact hatchback will be powered by same hybrid drivetrain from the 2010 Lexus HS 250h, which produces a total of 187-hp from a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine.

With a hatch design, perhaps this will be the first Lexus non-SUV in recent years to have fold-down rear seats? Also perhaps the battery storage will be optimized a la Prius...

Looks good IMO.
I really wish that Lexus was doing a little more to create visual interest on the sides of their cars. Almost every single sedan is completely flat and rather dull, though they are also simple and the curves are rather organic.
I guess it just depends on your preference but I wish they were adding just a little more pizzaz to the side flanks.

Is that photo authentic? Not bad.. hope the front isn't to plain, wish it looks at least a little like the sketch.
p.s. check the design detail in the tail-lights. LFA anyone?

Earlier rumors indicate that the Lexus hatch will be based on the FWD Auris, but this quote from Autoblog today is interesting:
"Think BMW 1 Series, but hybrid." That's how Lexus describes the LF-C.
One can only hope that Lexus doesn't only mean "think 1-series" in terms of market position, but also drivetrain layout.
The leaked pic looks good so far, with short overhangs and flowing lines. If the front looks just like it does in the sketch Lexus should be onto something good indeed.
