Good job RCL.
I had to change mine earlier this year and had the same issue of not being able to remove the unit. I used two curtain rod hangers and slipped them under the assy about 1/4"-1/2" in from the corners. I then used a couple of pliers to pull the assy out of the mounting,
As you can see from the above photos, you just push the assy back into place until it snaps.
NOTE: This assy also needs to be removed, if you want to replace the rear deck speakers.

I do have about if not the same setup as the above picture but the thing just will not "click" back in.

Assy = Assembly (the collection of parts that makeup the third brake light assembly (ie. clips, bulbs, socket assemblies, lens, plastic housing, etc.))
Make sure the assy looks like the one posted (has all the parts and placements), then align the assy flush on the rear deck. You should now be able to slide the assy back into place and feel a hard snap as it pops into place against the window.

Thanks RCL and 2K95es300 for posting up the helpful pics.
My assy,
, has the same retainer clips and stuff but it won't "click" back in. I'll take some pics when I get back from my one week holiday and hopefully someone can help point me in the righth direction. Cheers guys..

There is an easy fix to getting the cover off the third brake light. I have a 1995 ES 300 and there is a hole under the third brake light that you can stick a phillips screwdriver in (stratight up) and pry the cover towards the front of the car. I had my cover off in 30 seconds and went on to replace the bulbs.

Many posts about this-some just wrong for a 94 ES300-whoever said unplug the wiring from the trunk..can't be done on mine-whoever said take the package tray out first-WRONG!-Won't come out until the third brake light housing is off-whoever said use paint can openers and pull it towards you--RIGHT! I used two allen wrenches and pliars-popped right off-bulbs went in easily-snapped it back on-5 minutes total!
