Exhibit A of why I hate decals on paint, you can never get away from them fully, not only because of the residue, but also because of fade-in. It seems like at this point your only viable choice would be the Polishing Compound - start with a light polish, if it doesn't work, get the rubbing compound followed by the polish, if that fails as well, get a 3000 grit 3M Trizact sanding pad (the best sandpaper I've ever used), then compound, then polish, could be a bunch of work though.

Seems a bit excessive for it to fade so much, but an easy way to find out would be to look on the inside of the trunk, or in the door jams, they wouldn't get as affected by the sun, preserving the original color. If the door jams are the same color as the lettering, then yes, you are out of luck here, unless you are about to repaint the entire trunk lid..

Maybe but if that's residue it was left behind perfectly in shape of the lettering. I have noticed that gold tinted paints fade towards silver in fact I worked on a Toyota today with gold paint that is now mostly silver the hood especially.

I've seen cars turn silver before, but mostly in warmer regions, though I suppose I never seen an original color it seems as I think about it..
Just thought that it would be quite interesting to see how it looks under the Number Plate, as it should've preserved the original color.
