Hi everyone,
Lately I start to notice the car not shifting to 4th gear or OD after driving for 10min. I have no lights on in the dash neither CEL on. Oil levels are good for both transmission and engine. When I drive on the high way, i can be on 4th gear and if I slow down and the car shifts to 3rd, and then it stays on third even if I go over 50mph. Some times I just pull off, turn the var off and on, and then if shifts to 4th gear. Any ideas of what is happenning?
I drive an Es300 2001 with 130k miles on the odometer.

Hello,
Is your CEL on when you just turn the Ignition to the ON position, without starting the engine?
Either way, try connecting the Scan Tool to see if any of the codes are Pending, an issue with a Knock or Throttle Position Sensor can disable Overdrive without triggering the O/D Light. While at it, check the Engine Live Data, make sure that all the Operating Parameters, like Coolant Temperature, Throttle Position, etc. are normal and do not dip unexpectedly as if the contact is lost while on the way. If nothing else would help, you may need to get a Brand Specific scan tool capable of showing the Live Data not only for the Engine, but for a Transmission, something like a Techstream Cable, though it is a pain to set up with the older cars.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Oh well, a CEL must be On when the key is in the ON position, if it isn't, either the bulb is busted, or you have issues with the ECU, I would start with the former if I were you..
Either way, if you don't have your own OBD2 Scan Tool, any major Car Parts Store will have a Scan Tool to pull the Fault Codes out of that car if there are any, making it a great first step, followed by some new bulbs for the Instrument Cluster.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Huh, I've only seen it in a Honda before, that's strange..
How did the issue first begin, were there any repairs done before that?
Either way, try connecting an OBD2 Scan Tool and see what happens, you can also try shorting Te and E1 Pins in the Diagnostics connector under the hood and see if the lights flash. Other thing you can try is Disconnecting a MAF sensor as it triggers the CEL immediately, see if the light comes On.

Does the CEL light work? There is no way to have bad knock sensors and not have a code.
