when we purchased a new es300, sales rep told us to change engine oil every 5000 miles. i'm not skeptical about quality of lexus, but is this recommended interval for reg. oil change without using synthetic? how often do you change it? i'm willing to do next oil change myself, and do you recommend OEM filter or any aftermarket will do? and lastly, how many quarts of oil does it require(first timer with v6)?
thx for any input..

I would go by the manual which I think says change every 7,500 miles. This interval is using regular oil. If you do a search on synthetic you can read all the info you want, for days!.
I use (since 1994) and like synthetic for the time it saves and protection it gives; but, again it is like the Ford vs Chevy debate. People believe what they want. I change my oil once per year. The top oil filters out there I feel are Fleetguard, Amsoil, Mobil & Baldwin.
I would say it takes probably 5 or 6 qts but look in the manual of online through Lexus. It will have all the info online. Just need to set-up account.

this is an ongoing topic of discussion on this site and every other automotive forum out there.
There are many opinions based on each own's experience and lots of scientific data collected from many sources. They all point to different oil change intervals.
The oil change interval that works for me is one that gives the car sufficient and acceptable service and gives me comfortable piece of mind.
Personally I would change conventional oils every 3,000 miles. I prefer synthetics and change them every 5,000 miles. The only time I have used conventional oil is when the dealer changes it and I forget to tell them to use synthetic. (don't worry, you can alternate back and forth with no damage to the engine).
The filter is changed with the oil every time.
The 02-03 ES (1MZ-FE) requires 5 quarts of oil.
(Mobil 1 filter #, should you do it yourself, is M1-102)
Be careful when changing the oil filter on the 1MZ-FE when the exhaust is hot, as the filter is in the front just below the manifold. You stand in front of the car to remove it, don't look under the car for the filter. Wear long sleeves.
