Default Oil 5w or 10w???

Went to Jiffy Lube, their computer told them Lexus requires 10w 30? But on the oil cap on the engine it says 5w30? Which do you use, does it really matter?

5W30. The oil flows more freely when cold. My dealer suggested that I switch to 10w-30 only if the motor starts to burn oil (on my other 4Runner).

you posted this already, but I'll tell you the same here.

5w-30 if the car has less than 75K miles on it.
10w-30 if has more than 75k miles on it. Use a 10w-30 formulated for high mileage engines, it has additives in it to help rejuvenate seals.

sorry to bring up an old post, but today i changed my oil by myself for the first time and wondering if it would mess up my motor if i used 5w-30 on a 1998 with 120,000 miles.

My Lexus dealer who is in the NYC area has always used 10W-30 oil year round, even though it says in the Owners Manual that the preferred weight is 5W-30. I have always questioned this, but thay told me that they've had absolutely no problems with this weight, and they use it on ALL models of Lexus vehicles. Go fight City Hall.

Congrats on your first DIY oil change I know exactly how it feels when doing the job by yourself. I used to take my car to the Toyota dealership for oil changes. Then I discovered that 10W-30 full synthetic would be a better switch for my high mileage ES, and that a set of wheel ramps were on sale at my local Sears store The rest is history, and I've been doing my own changes for the last 10 months. No problems at all

no, it won't hurt it at all.
however, as stated before, I would have gone with the 10w.
