the inside door handles of my '96 are made out of cheap, lightweight plastic
many luxury cars have metal, chromed interior door handles
does anyone know if it is possible to get these in an ES?
also, the border around the recessed handle area is also cheap and plasticky, and i don't think that the wood dash kits include wood pieces for those. anyone know where they can be acquired?

The only ones that come with the chromed inner door handles in an ES are from the 2002-2004 models. Unfortunately they're not made of the same geometry as in the 1st-gen ES, and therefore can't be transferrable to a '96 ES.
Some of the non-luxury cars have the same feature too, such as in the '95 Accord. So you do have some options to look into.

Supposedly the '01 Coach Editions had the chrome interior door handles, so a 97-01 owner could retrofit them (part might be tricky to track down). I, too, was once obsessed with this mod, but decided it wasn't a big deal (especially with the black interior like I have, the door handles aren't even that noticeable).
For your '96, you could try that chrome coating (check out the thread on cars with completely chromed exteriors for the name of the stuff), and dismantle the door handle assembly and just do the handle. Not sure how well it would hold up or how much the stuff costs, though
