Question Car shaking...

I searched for this and didn't find it, but I recently went to Florida. I drove there then on the way back when I reach about 60 mph+ the car starts shaking. My tires are pretty bald, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'm going to get new tires this weekend, but do you think that's the problem?

It's most likely that your tires need balancing, that's the usual problem.

Since you say you are planning to get new tires soon, look for a tire shop that offers an alignment and balancing package with the purchase of tires. In any case, it's a good idea to get your tires aligned when purchased new.

I'll probably have all that done at Discount Tire or something. I'm hoping that's the only problem. Thanks.

New tires, high speed wheel balancing and 4 wheel alignment, and all your problems should go away.

Thumbs up

Agreed! Those are the most obvious items to check Pearl. That should correct your shaking concerns or at the very least give you a huge improvement.....what kind of tires are you considering?

I'm not sure yet. I'm kind of on a budget being in college and all, but I don't want to get the cheapest ones. I guess I just need something with some quality and a decent price.

May I suggest browsing in Tire Rack?

Just as you mentioned on what you want in new tires,

Quality: check
Decent price: check

When you get your new tires, make sure that the shop's balance machine has been recently calibrated....an HONEST shop manager should be able to tell you that. Also, watch the tires on the machine as they spin and make sure they don't wobble side-to-side ( lateral runout ) or up-and-down
( wheel hop ). If they do you'll still have a shimmy no matter how well the machine balances them.
If the shop won't let you do this, find one that will. NTB (National Tire and Battery) is pretty good about this...and standing behind their work. They'll re-mount or rebalance the tires free on a dozen different machines if necessary if you're not satisfied.
