Question Toyota "Super" long life coolant (pink):

Hi guys,

I just received my copy of the spring 2004 Toyota Gazette (a Toyota Canada publication that gives some news & advice on products & services for Toyota owners). In it, it talks about a new engine coolant called Toyota Super long life coolant (a pink fluid that comes already pre-diluted with a 55/45 mix in a 3.7 litre jug) that is suppose to last much longer than the regular Toyota "long life" (red stuff) that I have just put in my 01 ES Although there is no mention of specifics as to how long this stuff is good for both time & milage (kilometers for us Canucks). It is also fully compatible with earlier models according to the brochure. Does anybody have any specifics or "detailed" info on this product or what exactly is in it? Any help is greatly appreciated, I understand the new Toyota/Lexus vehicles come factory equipped with this stuff now.

Yeah this new long life stuff is similar to the GM version of DexCool which is their long life coolant mix. The long life stuff wont harm your older vehicle. With the newer coolant (new formulation) allows you to lengthen your coolant flush intervals. I like to use a 30k mile or every other year interval, whichever comes first to change out my coolant. I believe with the new extended life fluid, you can go to 45k invtervals. The new stuff will only benefit you in the long run.

Thanks for the info flip Any idea if this stuff is much more expensive than the regular red long life stuff from Toyota? (not sure why they call the red stuff long life if you need to change it every 2 years anyways). As you mentioned, it should protect the cooling system for a longer time but will perform better than the red stuff in terms of a lower operating temperature and such?

It's just a different formulation thats designed to have a higher boiling point and obviously a lower freezing point. The original Toyota Red Coolant was great stuff to begin with. I only imagine that the extended formulation works the same or better especially for longevity.

Still a good idea....as it is with any coolant...to give it an occasional PH check to test for acidity. Acid build-up in coolant is one of the primary ways that radiator corrosion can start.

While the coolant may be extened life, the thermostat will still have the same schedule. So depending who may perform the work, you may get a full coolant drain anyhow.

Can the flush be a DIY? Or would it be too messy? I never realized that coolant needs to be flushed after 2 years.

A coolant flush is definitely DIY. Just make sure you know where the petcock is to drain your radiator and an open weekend to do it on.

Cool

Search for my thread on replacing my radiator.

Stock coolant lasted something insane, like 12-13 years with no trace of a flush. (This was a beach house car in Florida for the last few years before I got it though. Which is why my '93 had bearly 80K when I got it last year.)
