Default lcd not working in stock radio

Anyone else have the problem of not being able to read the stock lcd on the radio? How much does it cost to replace and is it a diy?

You got a few choices:

1) Replace stereo unit at your dealership for $600+
2) Replace with an aftermarket head unit (it will most likely have to be customized to fit the double-din slot).
3) Send a PM to "O.L.T." to fix or replace the LCD lighting of the unit. This person runs Lextech.org

My '98 did the same thing. The dealer removed the head unit, sent it out for LCD replacement, and reinstalled it. $250 canadian. Only downside was no radio for a few weeks. Good as new now.

Depends on the failure I think. In my case the LCD display failed (started going black in areas), the LED's were still OK.

I've got this exact same problem- the LCD is bled out and dead.. local Lexus dealer wanted $800 US to replace it... I've got an Empeg and I'm dying to use it in this 98 ES300- how exactly are the aftermarket head units hooked up? i've got the wiring schematics here for my car and whether this is a Nakamichi or not (i dont know) the stock head unit is all tied into the amps just like I feared. is it possible to keep the stock amps with an aftermarket head unit? anyone figure out what some of these wires are?

Thanks for any info. i've been searching around the forum for an hour and haven't found much

Side question: Do the Nakamichi and Pioneer stereos have the same face?

cbreaker, welcome to CL A few people on this board have successfully installed aftermarket head units in their '97-'01 ES. Here are the ones I know about:

sk8er251cc's thread (Alpine head unit)
Lexus007's thread (DVD head unit)

Take a look in those threads and read about their install methods. You can send them a PM if you have any specific questions about them.

And to answer your side question, the only difference between the Nakamachi and Pioneer stereo faces is the name logo located on the top right corner. Also, the Nakamachi system seems to have better sound quality than the Pioneer, but I don't know the audio specifications off the top of my head. You can probably do a search and find out yourself. Anyway, hope this helps out

Thank you for the links and info. Seems like I must have the Pioneer. No problem, I have an Empeg to put in and today I found a Toyota ISO adapter. Each wire seems to map perfectly to the schematics I've got for the stereo. I've got it spliced up and ready to go.. just waiting for sun-up tomorrow.

It took a lot of guess work to find, a lot of people say and tell others that wiring adapters don't exist for that series ES300... I subscribed to techinfo.lexus.com and "liberated" a copy of every PDF on the site pertaining to my car. Couple thousand of 'em At least now I have something to reference..

Can anyone recommend a face kit for a single DIN? stock stereo is awfully big
