I was thinking maybe if that spring fails, you could use a plastic pry tool to put pressure on the fuel door as you pull the cable. That way once the fuel door is unlocked, you can swing it out instead of relying on the spring mechanism. Should definitely work in a pinch until you can get that fixed.
