The reason I purchased an ES was the fact it was the least expensive of the Lexus model line. I'm glad I did purchase the ES. I still have it today. I have about 227K miles and it runs great. I have had the timing belt changed twice, I do all my own oil changes and I'm going to change both O2 sensors and the spark plugs. I also need new tires. Other than that i'm real happy with my 1996 ES 300.

Default Had a Camry

My wife has an older 4 cyl.Camry that has been exceptionally reliable. I wanted more of the same but with more power and options. I was looking for a good used v6 Camry or Avalon. In my search I found my ES. I drove it one time and bought it. Been a happy owner ever since.

At first I was a bit aware of the Lexus label, but after 2 years, already being a Camry owner, I view Lex as a glorified and more refined Camry.... and that's a really good thing since Camry is a hell of a car.

Oh, I drove a Chevy Berretta 4 cylinder for 14 years prior to buying my ES. I'm still smiling about the upgrade.

I am sick of sportscar. I owned an NSX, Porsche C4S and a BMW M3 before I went with the new Lex.
They are great cars but its simply not comfortable for daily use ......
I had 12 points plus a major accident (although its not my fault), I decided to step down.... Hehe

It's a sleeer car and if I do 90 in the middle lane and 45 in the left the cops leave me alone but really I just saw the deal for the Lexus Xmas/Winter deals went and check it out, test drove it and walked out a Lexus owner, it all happened so fast, never intended to get the ES but the Camry I wanted the salesman kept raising the price so that helped.

I test drove the ES330 and was impressed, wish they put the 3.3 into the ES when they 1st initially redesigned it, when I go to trade it's gonna be hard deciding between the 280hp Avalon thats LS like and the ES

For me (just like everyone else) - I wanted a car that would never have to sit off the side of the highway with a white towel sticking out of the window.

I was won-over once I visited a dealer and took one for a test-drive. - No other car (including Benz) cruised like the ES. The last facet that will keep me with Lexus is the reliable & top notch service

My wife and I had owned one Camry and two different Avalons and started shopping for another Avalon. She fell in love with the 2003 ES300 and we wound up buying it. She still loves the thing after 25,000 miles but I would not have it for myself. I like my 1999 RX300 and having it was a factor in her deciding to get the ES. The Avalon has more interior room and is a mighty fine riding and handling car. But she is the primary driver of the ES and whatever pleases her is what she gets. I tried to talk her into getting a LS or at least a GS, but no, she had to have this ES. Another factor was our youngest son has his second GS. I can't tell that the GS rides or handles any better than the ES myself.

Default Why the ES?

My wife was driving a MB C280. She loved that car. It was compact but had a lot of room inside. Had the benz feel, look, smell...in other words it was all benz wrapped in a small enough package for her. Then the problems started. In the last year we had it, it was in the shop 8 times with an average cost of $550 per repair. It had to go! I told my wife her next car had to be reliable. Her main thing was it had to be a luxury car. I took her to pick up the ES and she was upset. Hated it. Two years later she has gotten used to it, loves the reliability but still misses that benz. I will never really understand women.

Default Re: Why I bought ES300

I bought a 2003 model ES300 for my wife because she wanted the thing. I would never want it for myself especially because of the jerky shifting hesitating transmission.

Ref: Go to this website address and read about Toyota/Lexus downplaying the significance of the problems with the transmission in 2004-2004 ES 300's. They are trying to make it sound as if there have only been a handful of complaints.
Mr. Don Hammond with the Pittsburgh Gazette is actually doing us a favor with his newspaper article.

Good article and thanks for posting that gcrim. We already have a stickied thread here discussing more in-depth the problem occurring within the CL family, and the software "fix" incorporated with the problem.

I valet parked cars in Boston for 3 years in college. And just like another user posted, I was blown away by how smooth and quiet a Lexus is. You shut the door and all the noise of the city is GONE. The power steering is so strong you can turn the thing with your pinky, the brakes are reeeeeeeeeeee-diculous. I found one with black leather in STICK and I was sold. Ideally I'd like as SC in stick because of the rear-wheel drive. But because of finances, this will have to do for a few years.
