Recent Problem
I have a 1998 ES300 with 90k miles. Recently I have noticed a problem. It doesn't happen often but I am starting to wonder about it. When the car is warm (normal operating temp) and I start the car, the rpm's will reach about 500 and then the car will die. If I then wait a few seconds it will start normally. Sometimes it will take a few tries. The car starts fine cold, this occurrence just takes place if I try to start the car while it is still warm (for example if I run into the store for a few minutes and then come back to start the car) Let me know what you guys think my problem is. Thanks.

That sounds exactly the problem I had with my '01 ES many months ago. The problem was a dirty throttle body (link found here). Most likely yours is dirty as well from the symptoms you have described, so you need to get it cleaned. You can either do it the DIY method (which involves a can of throttle body cleaner, a bunch of old white rags and a long metal/plastic object to stuff the rags into the TB), or go to Toyota or Lexus dealership and ask them to do a throttle body cleaning. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

Thanks for the post. I will have my local Toyota perform a TB Cleaning and let you guys know how it turns out. Glad to hear it's not something very serious.

pushnlex could'nt have described the exact same situation I'am having.
and doug, great write up on the TB cleaning
I'm getting my TB cleaned on monday...also I talked with the guy from toyota parts ( the one who sold me my K&N filter) and he said he had the same problem with his 96 coach edition.
one of the mechanics also added that this drop in filter will create a bigger build up therefore clogging the TB. he said it also has to do with the oils that the filter uses. you know that's too bad for K&N

Agreed That's why I don't have the K&N filter in my ES anymore. The ES for some reason seems to be very touchy when it comes to performance air filter/intake replacements.
