My friend's uncle had a 2002 ES300 which he had the hard shifting transmission problem with and then he received the computer update which made things a bit better but i was sort of disappointed that Lexus just "smoothed things over" rather than a true fix. My mom is now interested in a new 2005 ES330 and i wondered if they had fully corrected this problem or if Lexus's fix was just a "reprogramming"... any help is appreciated. thanks

For the '05 ES330, word has it that the hard tranny shifting characteristics are not as noticeable as in the '02-'03 ES300, although I'm not certain if the transmission itself is completely fixed. Unfortunately we don't have enough '05 ES owners here to share their thoughts.

We have a 03 ES with that problem and have had the computer update and not as jerky, but still hesitates. However, close friends of ours purchased a 05 ES two months ago and it shifts perfectly..... no jerking and only a slight hesitation, not enough to quibble about. Not quite as much hesitation as my 99 RX300 and it isn't that bad. I don't like any hesitation, but RX not enough to get rid of it for.
