My mother has a 94 ES300 with 74000 miles that makes a loud howling noise when idling with the a/c on. The dealer said that the a/c system gets louder when stopped because it "kicks into a higher gear" (there words not mine) and quiets when the car starts moving. However, I am sure that this car isn't supposed to be this loud. It has always gotten a little louder when stopped but never so loud that you can't speak with the passenger without raising your voice. I am new to this forum and have been very impressed with how knowledgeable some of you are. Hopefully, someone out there can help me. Thanks!

Hi there. I had a similar situation, but I can't say for sure if this is what's happening with your car. It wound up being a power steering leak that was dripping on one of the belts causing it to slip. I think the power on the ac runs off of that belt which is why the tone of the noise would change.
