Idle control valve, hard to start

Idle control valve, hard to start
Gentlemen,
Car was hard to start and had a rough idle. The problem was carbon/dirt had fouled the ICV (Idle Control Valve). This valve's function is to provide path for air to bypass the butterfly assembly in the throttle body at idle; with out it functioning correctly the engine is starved for air. This is a common problem that can be remedied with a good cleaning process with carburetor cleaner.
When white electrical coil is removed from the ICV, it exposes a small pencil sized metal stud. This stud needs to rotate 1/8 turn feely and then one more additional 1/8 turn with some spring resistance for a total of a 1/4 turn. If this stud does not rotation freely, then the ICV will need to be cleaned.

- No new gaskets were needed, used old ones with no problems.
- Caution, when removing the ICV from the throttle body. Great care must be taken not to strip out the four screw heads when breaking the factory torque. A very tight fitting screw drive is essential.
- DO NOT disassemble the ICV assembly after removing it from the throttle body; it has critical settings that may not be able to be maintained if reassembled.

On my ES I have had the idle control valve changed twice in 2 years and I'm still having a problem. Doesn't happen all the time but it won't go away. The dealershoip has tried 4 times to fix it. What happens is the rpms will drop way low and the car chokes out. After a couple of seconds it goes away and car ride great. A couple of times it actually shut off. Re-start and it rides great. Anyone got any ideas what it is?

hey buddy. i have a few questions on this as well...
1.does the gasket need to be change or can we still use the old one for the ICV??
2. when putting it back together, does it need to be torque?? if so. what's the foot/pound to be torque??

1993 yoours is different, it's on the backside of the intake itself (firewall side) but right behind the firewall.
Most gaskets on the intake in general are paper gaskets. The best bet is to use some silicon to just make a new gasket. RTV is your friend.
reggiek
clean the entire upper intake & check for vacuum leaks. Change the sparkplugs while you're there.
Check fuel pressure @ idle also.
You should also be storing codes anytime it dies. After it dies, immediately drive to the autoparts store & get it scanned.
