Arrow When is it time to get a TUNE UP?

Hey guys, I'm new here - great forum!!!

I just got a 2000 ES300 and its pretty smooth. Only problem is that when you brake, the steering wheel vibrates a little bit. I don't know if this is related to the braking system or if the car just needs a tune up.

The car has 47,000 miles on it, so should I just get a tune up on it? Please let me know what you guys think.

If so, what should be included in the tune up?

thanks!!

Your rotors are probably warped.

if the problem exist only when you hit the brake pedal then it's the rotors.

Default what other lexus forums are there out there?

Is this the best Lexus forum out there? What are some others? This is a pretty pathetic forum compared to the acurazine I also post on. How come no replies to my very simple question? Are people here not helpful enough or simply too busy?

Not hating, just curious.

The owners manual gives good information on the tune-up at about 90k, I believe. Just for a little added extra, torque of the wheel lugs is 76 Ft Lbs dry (71 Ft Lbs wet). Over torque the lugs and the rotors may warp. Improperly tighten the lugs by not cross sequencing the tightening in three steps may also warp your rotors....

Pathetic???.. dud. you posted this yesterday and already got a reply.. is not like we all get pay to answer questions.. sorry if i sound like an A$ s..

anyways.. back to your simple question.. Tammy already answer your break problem.. as for the tune up. people usually do it around every 30K, 90K being the major tune up(time belt, water pump, spark plugs and wires and dis cap and rotor. . since your ES has around 47K i'm assuming the dealership already done the 30K. so you're have a long way to go.. else if you want a peace of mind.. go right ahead and waste your money.. or. you can pull out one spark plug and post a picture of it here and we can all give you our opinions.. OO yeh. Welcome to ClubLexus.

Default thanks!!

That's more like it, thanks!!

Like I said, I am a regular poster at acurazine and people there seem to be more active with responses and feedback, so I guess I might just be spoiled w/ immediate responses.

This is a new forum for me, so ofcourse it has its users have their own method of posting, I guess I just have to get used to it.

I sincerely appreciate your feedback Tammy and 1993ES300x!!

I got the car just a few days ago, so I really don't know too much about its history, I guess I will have to talk to the original owner and ask him if he got it tuned up at 30K miles.

thanks guys!

Cool

www.lexusownersclub.com is another awesome site.

Tune up: Iriduum spark plugs (NGK or Denso), air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve. You might want to have the injectors & the throttle body cleaned as well.

Careful on the 'pathetic' comments dude........not a good way to get on the good side of folks around these 2 sites, especially since your a newbie!

Cool

The vast majority of people on acurazine, like every other Honda/young demographic dominated forum I've every read are also a bunch of f'ing *******s, not to mention the "leet speak" . So count your blessings to be on an older, more mature, audiance.

Tune up is 90,000m.

Basically I agree w/ everyone else. You definately need a tune-up, and some new rotors. I went with some bremebo cross drilled and slotted zinc plated rotors off ebay. Also when it does that, your pads may be unevenly wearing. Also, sounds like spark-plugs need to be changed. If you are going to do it yourself, I'd suggest getting a new manifold gasket because the lower-three plugs are hard to get to without removing the manifold completely and in doing so, you should replace teh gasket for extra safety. It's only $20 at Auto zoneI did mine and it worked out great, no more bouncing or little shakes when breaking, also I changed out my struts and now have excellent streering, handling and braking.

The manifold gasket is metal, it will never need to be replaced.
Skip the drilled rotors, they're inferior; get blanks.

A tune-up isn't done at 30,000m on that car. You won't need a tune-up for another 1-3 years unless there are some malfunctions that are causing problems.

yes it is metal i replaced it to be safe. However i agree with rotors too, I like the look fo teh corss drilled and slotted though, allows for more air to cool down bakes. Just a personal preference

it looks real nice but the structural integrity is usually reduced.

for the same amount of time i would paint the calipers for a good look.
