Your ES is like my RX; under the driver's side front is a black flat pan with a 10mm allen hex type silver plug. I'd recommend a 10mm hex allen with 3/8 or 1/2 drive from Sears. Should be Type-IV Toyota fluid...3.8 quarts on a drain and fill...

I just called Toyota and they want 4.23 a quart. Thats not bad considering i only need 4 qts. I'm going to buy this today and do the drain and fill. Thanks Tammy

Tony,
The plug will have an aluminum washer, be aware not to drop it. If you have a torque wrench, tighten to about 35 Ft Lbs. (wet, meaning lubricated) ...
I used a small metal kitchen funnel to pour the fluid in... it has a small end that fits nice into the transmission fill tube.
Start the engine, brake engaged, step thru the Park to 2nd and back to Park steps on the shifter prior to checking the cold level on the dip stick, with the engine running in Park.
A gentle reminder, check again when transmission is hot...

Tammy. Is it the aluminum washer on the passenger side that needs a allen key wrench to loosen it? I'm ready to do this but i need to go and buy a allen key set..... Please help

I just replaced about 3.5 qts into the tranny.. I checked it without starting the car and it was passed the hot mark because i had to drive to the parts store.... I started the car and went through each gear a little bit and now i need to check it but its raining.... I got a wet *** in the mean time I have to say though i think the car started better and seems better already.... It sure didn't seem like 3.8 qts came out of the tranny? Thanks

I checked it again this morning since the car sat all night and the level was really thin around the HOT mark and alittle thicker at the COLD mark.... Is this overfilled? All i did was drain all that came out and replaced with 3.5 qts This was correct right? Please help..

Tony,

I wouldn't worry about the thick-thin factor on the dipstick. I see the same result when I check my oil, and I attribute this to the fact that the thicker portion of the old fluid (oil or tranny) settles on the bottom of the pan, and thus some of the fluid resides on the dipstick.

BTW, did you notice the ease in changing gears after the tranny fluid was replaced?

Yes very noticable when changing gears I felt it as soon as i got in the car to do a test drive... I had a big smile on my face knowing that this simple maintance cost 17 dollars and change and a dealer would have charged 50+ for this maintance fee.

Thanks lexusk8

My ISP just fixed the Cisco ... Tony, glad your service went smooth... Hold on to the little bit of fluid for "top-off"s.
