Is the 2002+ ES/Camry chassis much different than the 2001 and below?

Default Is the 2002+ ES/Camry chassis much different than the 2001 and below?

Somebody was telling me that the Camry/ES has used essentially the same chassis with only minor and moderate tweaks and revisions throughout the years from 1992 until current day 2005 models. That seems like an awfully long time to use essentially same chassis.

I could have sworn, and I think I've even read several places that the chassis as well as almost the entire rest of the car was redesigned from the ground up for 2002. Is that not the case? I know the car's interior and exterior changed dramatically... but I'm talking about if you just looked at the unibody structure, suspension, subframes, etc.

The guy telling me this is a mechanic and says that working underneath a pre 2002 and post 2002 camry is almost no different in terms of the overall layout, and that all of the components of the frame look nearly identical to the point he thinks it's only a tweaked version of the old chassis?

If this is the case does anyone know if for the 2007 redesign, the Camry is going to undergo any major changes to its chassis?

I guess the same question applies to the old 2004 and earlier style Avalon compared to the new one?

Wink

From 1992 - 2001 I agree, but the 2002 - present is a different chassis.

From what I have read yes, the 2007 Camry will have a new chassis as well.

BTW, Is there any info on the 2007 ES? I've only seen info on the Camry. Does anyone know if it will be redesigned at the same time as well? Or are they trying to differentiate them even more by designing them seperately and thus at different intervals?

Not much info & a small spy shot is about it. Yes it will be an all new redesigned ES for 2007. No in depth specifics that I am aware of now however, but stay tuned.......I'm sure more details will be out soon!

I'm waiting to see if they will offer AWD in the new ES! Or even better, an AWD Hybrid!
