I ply open the egr modulator and found there is a piece of round breather material whicj looks dirty and I replace it with a self fabricated filter using a generic breather material . Will this work OK???

Sure, It's just an air filter, keeping the big pieces out of the small orifice inside... A little dirty won't hurt the original, clean with dish detergent and replace.

That filter has 2 filtering media top and bottom. 1 coarse and the other finer. The top is the coarse side and should be cleaned or replaced with the course side on top.

It may not make a difference, ( they designed it for a reason), but I thought you should know.
