93 ES300 power steering hydraulic fan problem??
Hey guys-
I've got a quick question. I need someone familiar with the dual common oiling system (powersteering and hydraulic fan setup) on a 93 lexus es300. Also came on many other late model toyotas. Here is the issue: 145k miles, factory PS pump leaked, replaced with a ARI reman unit. Worked perfect for 3 weeks and then pump pretty much froze up and lost all power steering. Reinstalled another reman ARI pump and it was making a lot of noise and lots of air in the resevoir, let it sit overnight and noise and air went away the next morning. Called ARI tech and they said most likely air or a plugged pressure hose. Pressure hoses are fine after checking them.
Now, After looking at the system again, the hydraulic fan motor at low RPM's can be stopped by grabbing it with my hands. Over the summer I did not have any overheating problems. I am not familiar with the way these fans operate, can someone fill me in? I thought they would spin like crazy all the time, maybe i am wrong...I'm thinking im having a slight restriction in the fan motor but hopefully someone with experiance can tell me how these motors work and if im right.
thanks
erik

Werd. High speed is a killer. You can hold it still, & the blades are kinda bendy, but I wouldn't stick an appendage in there if it's moving fast!!!
It's a fluid motor, it slips like crazy - don't worry about it.
The fan is a low speed / high speed. If you'll notice on top of the powersteering pump there is an extra outlet / inlet with an electrical plug by them.
The electrical plug is a solenoid controlled by the cooling fan ECU. The ECU opens the solenoid all the way & the fan spins fast. (If a P/S fan doesn't spin fast, it's because the connector has simply been unplugged).
In the Diagnostic port, bridge E1 & OP1 & the fan will spin at high speed.
Trust me... bleed the powersteering system yourself, they're not going to do it for you. Grab 2 quarts of a good Dexron III ATF fluid.
Awsome directions here

Great topic and info... around toyota for a long time!!!love it!The more I read about this topic, the more misterious it becomes to be. I am going through similar problems, and it seems that this nightmare is taking it's toll on me. I am about to give up! Recently been having problems with my 93 es 300 3vzfe. It started by exploding top water hose on expressway. lucky i was just about to exit with a 5 minute drive to park it home less that a mile where i heard the busting hose. Replaced the hose. refilled, It was leaking like crazy on the right ride behind wheel cover.... replaced w.pump, timing belt. engine was checked, everything is ok but the overheating continues in form of vapor at the top reservouir. did a little research and came across this golden mine of information and by the way this is the closest i have been able to proof read this article almost in slow motion...the last thing i will try to do is change the hydraulic fan part number 16960-62010 part number. It will have to come from the junk yard. Just lost my job yesterday. Going to this junk yard in wich they offer a $50 special all you can carry. Any advice on things i might look out for to get? Please help
