Default ES300 converter question

I have an ES300 year 1999 and it has almost 140k miles.

Recently, the car's check engine light came on.
I took it to a garage to check the problem and the mechanic told me it is the converter problem.
He told me ES300 has 3 converters: the front left and the front right converters are still working. The rear converter and the rear sensor were worn out due to high mileages. The part is ~$1400 and his labor is ~$200. The total is about $1700.

He does not recommend the universal converter because he had some bad experience.
Thus, he wants to order the rear converter directly from the Lexus dealer.
The rear converter is ~$1100 and the rear sensor is ~$200.

This is going to cost me a fortune, I am not sure if I should drive my car to the ground.
Is the price reasonable? Does anyone have similar experience?
Could you please offer me some advice?

Thanks.

Cool

Does anyone else not have a clue what he's talking about with "converters"?
The only converter I know about is the torque converter .

Go somewhere & scan the codes. We can't help you if we don't know what the problem is.

I have a 99 RX...I had to get rid of my precats down in Mexico due to sulfur damage from some bad gas. I have only a Magnaflow HiFlow Cat and two downpipes on the 1MZFE engine we use.

No check engine lights have shown up, and if I know NJ that they only do an OBDII check on your car if it is 99 and everything else on my readiness monitors shows functioning or not applicable, so you should pass if you went with a universal.

well, i have done a few exhausts with our older cars. and this website has real good prices and free shipping most times.
http://www.******************.com/
the co. that works well with the foreign cars is bosal. the offer lifetime warranty on all parts including the pipes.
they are really pretty inexpensive also, and they fit very well.
i would check out their site for prices that i have found are better than most stores
