93 es 300 engine shaking/vibation problem
Hi everyone,
Recently I have been experiencing very noticeable shaking/vibration while driving my '93 es 300 (has 170,000 km on it). I can feel this vibration/shaking pretty much at all speeds. The car also hesitates when acclerating as if a cynlinder in the engine is misfiring. I know the vibration is coming from the engine but i'm not sure what is causing it. I went to a mechanic and he replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wire set, pcv valve, ignition cap & rotor. The vibrationhas lessened somewhat however it is still noticeable. The mechanic now plans to hook up the car to his diagnostic machine to determine what the problem is...he suspects the fuel injectors might need to be replaced. I have also done some research on my own and have read that engine shaking/vibration is most likely caused by balance shafts being misaligned or a faulty motor mount. Does this make sense?
Has anyone else had this problem?? Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

thanks for the response. the engine has been hesitating when I try to accelerate. The car is slow to reach higher speeds as if one of the cylinders is misfiring. Does the mechanic's thought that the fuel injectors might need to be replaced make sense to you?

Ya, you're mechanic is crazy. Look at not just Toyota, but mazda, Honda, and Eventually Nissan began using Nippon-Denso fuel injectors. The failure rate is so unbelievably low, it makes your mechanic look stupid to most of us. Anything can happen, but fuel injectors are about the last thing on earth I would check.
Replace the torsonal engine mount (What we call the dog-bone). The rubber isolation splits with age & stress. Generic ones on ebay are like $30 shipped, you need a 14mm socket to change it.

AFA stumbling on accelleration check for vacuum leaks. Check your o2 sensors if it runs better at full throttle.
Throw away his spark plugs if they are not NGK, or Denso. Your car is gaurenteed to run like *** within a year of normal driving if they are not. Sometimes only a couple months. Throw away the spark plug wires if they are not OEM Toyota ($90) Vitek ($125), or Magnacore ($250). The resistance is wrong, they are the lowest quality of all time & will destroy themselves just sitting on the engine.
I've got news for ya. If your mechanic doesn't have a > $6,000 Toyota specific scanner, he can't log your OBD-I Toyota engine...

thanks for your input guys it has been helpful. I think I might try my luck with another mechanic that has more experience with Toyotas. The engine mount is something that has been mentioned several times when I have discussed the problem with others...i think that might be the issue. As you can probably tell my knowledge of cars is quite limited-lol your help & suggestions have been greatly appreciated.

most likely the stated above...
BUT, it could also be the tranny... when my first one went out it shook a heck of a lot when you started going. Felt like you were burning out and getting wheelhop, without spinning tires.

Actually, it is very possible it is the fuel injector. I also had a shaking/vibration/rough idle on my 1993 ES and I brought it into the shop for what I thought was a timing belt replacement (because it was due for a replacement) and after doing $400 worth of tuneup work of new plugs wires, rotors, distributor cap, manifold and exhaust cleaning, my mechanic still said it was running rough. Well it turns out the fuel injector on my third cylinder was bad and burnt out and it had stopped working completely. I'm not sure whether or not fuel was getting to that cylinder but the mechanic said that that cylinder was not firing at all and so I was basically running 5 cylinders with bad timing. So after a new fuel injector and cleaning everything for $500 its back to running great with 195,000 miles on it.
