Default HID bulb burnt out.

After I started my car this morning I noticed a red glow coming from the drivers side. Upon further inspection it appears my factory HID bulb has had it's day. By the time I got to work my headlight had ceased omitting light all together. Hopefully this is just the bulb. Can someone help me locate a part # and if so how much this is going to cost. Also if anyone has any DIY instruction for an 00-01 HID bulb replacement that would be very much appreciated.

Dom,

Your OEM HID bulb part number is D2R. Prices for these bulbs can range anywhere from $50 to $150 per bulb set, depending on where you shop. Ebay would be a good start

Just as a double-check to make sure it's the bulb that's the problem, I would replace the driver side bulb with the passenger one and see if that lights up. If so, then you know it's the bulb that's burnt out and needs to be replaced. I would replace both bulbs at the same time so that you start out with a fresh set and get equal amount of brightness from them.

NYC ES3 wrote up an excellent DIY piece on bulb replacement with the '97-'01 ES. Check it here

Doug, Thanks for the info and link. However do I need to remove the whole headlight assemble to change the bulb? If not how do I go about doing that? Where did you buy your bulbs and are they Phillips?

I bought my Philips bulbs from Ebay (forgot the seller's name but do a search for "lexus d2r" there, you'll find LOTS of bulbs up for grabs). For just a bulb change, you do not need to remove the headlamp assembly. Just disconnect the wiring harness from the stock connector, twist open the grey plastic cap cover, and unclip the hinge that hooks the D2R bulb in place so the bulb can be removed. No tools needed, and this can all be done in less than 5 min

Appreciate the offer Baddis, but I went ahead and got 2 bulbs last nite for $58 a piece. I coudn't pass it up. Replaced them both and saved the one good one I had left. Only thing is I'm not feeling how extremely white these ones are. My stock Philips had a slight blue tint to them and these ones only have that look for the first 2 seconds the lights come on. How much would you be willing to sell the bulb for?

Cool

superpats they'll color change after a few hours of use. Then as they dim, the blue/UV color will stay the same. That's what takes 100 hours.

Baddis I don't want to hold you up on that bulb. I think I'm all set for now. I appreciate the offer though .

Thanks Phoenix. So your saying after 100 hours of use they will dim to a more blue hue?

Cool

Kind of a 2 part thing here:
1) All the bulbs will dim over time, but after 100 hours diminishing returns set in. The light will dim & change color the most in that say first hundred hours.
2) No, 4000k bulbs won't color change to blue, but they will change a little bit.
