Exclamation Trans Shudder

Searched

This is a recent problem that has occured.

Year: 1998
Mileage: 83XXX
Trans fluid color: Red + Filled to top
Previous Owner: Older Lady full Maintenance at Lexus
Symptom: Shuddering trans between final gear and overdrive (sometimes shifts notchy between 1-3) Shifts into D, R no problem except for little nudge into D from N.

The transaxle has started to shudder at certain speeds. I do feel that shifts between gears at low RPM's are a bit rough but nothing horrid at all. The shift to overdrive gear however is pretty bad at times. The car cannot decide wether to use 3rd/4th or shift to overdrive. It seems to bounce back and forth and shudder. Today, at 60mph with 1/4 throttle, it shuddered 2x which resulted in a "Fuel Cut off" like feeling. It happen again but is nothing horrible. It just seems that the car has a hard time deciding between last gear and overdrive. From searching/knowlege this is what I think is the problem:

1. Needs trans fluid flush (Highly unlikley since its bright red and full)
2. Trans solendoids need replacement
3. Re-set ECU to adapt to new driving style with new owner
4. Rebuild trans as clutch plates slipping (Highly unlikely since it has 0 hesitation and holds power throughout all gears no problem at any rpm)

Name so more or see if I am right. I am going to drain the 2qt of fluid out just in case for a piece of mind and re-set the battery. Ill tell you how it all goes

Cool

* If it were the solenoids, you'd have idiot lights & stored codes.
* The ECU is not retarded. It would never get that far out of whack.

1) What fluid is in it? Dexron-III, or TT-IV?
2) Needs to be flushed, incorrect fluid level, clogged transmission filter, bad pump / clogged passages -> low pressure
3) I think almost all the A541's had a kick-down cable. Check / Adjust the TV cable.

Will have it pressure tested but where?

1)Fluid type I dont know, yet i saw a maintenance record from a Jiffy Lube type place so yea...

2)Can I use the Type IV even though the car is a 98?
Will have it pressure tested but where?

3) Will Adjust but loosen or tighten for firmer or softer?

Thanks Pheonix

If the transmission dipstick has "Use Type IV Only" stamped on it... Type IV is it.
Check your owners manual to be sure.
If so, have a Toyota dealer flush the system, insuring you eliminate any "other" fluid Jiffy may have added. Many use a universal type fluid.... 'bout the only thing right is the color.

Ya, I'm not sure if '98 was the switch over, but it's close. Honestly... I remember the swap over happening mid year. So you'll have to check your manuals.
