Default My Lexus ES 300 is Stalling...Pls Help!!!

Last night my 1993 ES 300 kept stalling. The car would not go much faster then 20-30km/h..when I tried accelerating the Rpms would go to about 7 or 8 but the car would not go any faster. The car would also periodically stall & I had to wait for a bit to re-start the car until I finally got home. Due to the time of night I could not take it to a car repair shop.

Any ideas what could be causing this? I got an oil change earlier that day using the correct oil as recommended in the owner's manual...is there something perhaps they did? Is the engine shot? It seems like its losing power. Pls provide any suggestions.

Thanks.

Cool

Clean your IAC valve, and check for vacuum leaks. Then disconnected wiring.

Thanks for your response Phoenix. Now the vehicle will actually not move at all. Just the rpms moving but the car remains stationary. Could it be that the transmission needs to be replaced? That is what the mechanic at the garage I took my car to is thinking. Does this make sense?

Ok, so what are your symptoms. Is the engine stalling, or is the transmission slipping?
If the transmission is slipping & you've been driving it (that's extremely stupid). You've worn the clutches out. Flush the fluid out & fill to the correct level & quit driving it until you do.

If the engine is stalling, troubleshoot the engine & not the transmission.

Well part of the reason why I've posted something on this site is that I'm not particularly car savvy. So I could not tell you what it feels like to have a transmission slipping (call me stupid if you like). I am a car layman to say the least. All I know is that the car started stalling on Saturday night and would not go past 20/30 km/h. I have not driven it since and in fact the car will not move at all now just the rpms increasing when I hit the gas. I guess I will leave the problem in the hands of my mechanic. He seems to think its a transmission problem...& the fluid was flushed and changed in December of 2005.

Yea, it's gotta be the tranny. A similar problem my brother in law had with his corolla. The car wouldn't go past 30mph (instead of kph).

Hey Buddy.. I am very sure about Pheonix mentioning you might have worn out your clutch. I had a manual car once and had the same problem. The car would not go past 30 Miles per hour but the RPM is way up there. But fortunately it was manual car, I had to replace the cluth. I believe we don't have a clutch in automatic and it is knowm more as a torq converter . It looks like you mechanic is prob right. Let us know the end result. Good Luck !!

I am having the same problem. I'll stop at a red light and my car will sometimes stall. I took it to pep boys and they said the could not get the car to stall and that no codes came up on the diagnostics. I asked if they checked the IAC valve and did not feel it was that either. Can so done give me advice? Thanks!

Go ahead and replace transmission filter. cost $16.99 @ autozone.. your car will be up and running again.. the filter is locate inside of transmission oil pant. So make sure to count how many bolts around the pant before you buy the part. The part come with a gasket and a filter in a box.
