Question

And one last topic: What kind of spark plugs do you all use? I hear many different things that it can improve the performance of your car, but I don't have any idea if that's just from the companies that make them or if it's true. So let me know, I'd like to hear what you use. Ramsee1

Default Plugs

Using the stock Denso Iridium plugs, they are required on the GS, supposedly better than even the Plat+4. Don't know if the ES has the Iridium plugs, but if it does you shouldn't change to Platinum, if they are regular plugs, I'd upgrade to at least Platinum or the Iridiums.

Thank you. Since I've been the owner I haven't changed the plugs. I will check into what is available for the ES.

Denso platinum all the way. Copper is for better combustion, I think, but platinum is for more durable, reliable, and more consistent firing. The car was originally equipped with Denso platinum, and has been ever since. On a side note, just about everything in my engine compartment says "Denso" on it...

Question

Is Iridium a completely different type of plug than Platinum, or are they just different models? I am fairly sure the plugs on my ES are stock, but don't know if that means Toyota parts or if the Denso ones are already in there. Any help would be appreciated. In the meantime I will try to find specs. Ramsee1

Cool, found them. They are the Iridium ones. Hopefully all the plugs for the ES are easily accessible.

Default Iridium vs. Platinum

I remember reading somewhere the difference between the 2, I'll look around and see if I can find it.

Question

50 bucks for a set of 4. That's what I found. Is this too high?

Default They are probably that expensive

I may be able to do better for you. Call Tommy Acciarello at Lexus of Manhattan (212)977-4400, tell him John Morello referred you, see what he can do for you.

Platinum plugs are mainly for durability, not performance, as platinum is not a good electrical conductor. Copper conducts well but fouls quickly while iridium is in the middle. Two electrodes are preferred for cars with high effective compression (forced induction). Only one electrode fires at a time....two and four give you fault tolerance, but four can reduce the spark and work best with a high power ignition and better plug wires.

But dispite the numerous claims in magazines, ignitions, plug wires, and plugs will NOT give you any horsepower or torque unless your current setup is messed up to begin with.

I'm using Denso IK20's for now but will switch to the OEM dual electrode platinum when I get my s/c.

Yeah i've been running Iridium IK20s since June. Still runs great on my car. I installed them at 90K, and i'm currently at 100,200 miles. Yes I agree, the rear bank is the hardest to get to. BTW, Denso Iridiums are OEM on 2002 and up Camry and ES300 models 1MZ-FE. 97-01 1MZ-FE use Denso dual tipped platinum and 94-96 1MZ-FE come with plain Denso platinum plugs.
