Default BIG decision for my 93 es

well after about a week and a half at the shop they pretty much changed the gasket seals and machined the cracks in the head, fired it up. No more leaking (smoke out muffler=gone) however the engine was still jerking. Apparently the machine shop did not thouroughly check the engine and rushed. Upon further inspection it appears that some valves or something have a little corrosion and therefore no compression. The mechanic told me he would soak the parts in this solution that would eat up the corrosion and theres a possibility that it would be all thats needed. However, after the soak if its still not good complete overhaul is a must. Thats the problem, I really love the car and dont want to ditch it. With the amount it costs to fix it (around 5000$) I could buy a used car, but then for that much I doubt I could find a reliable car, if anything some honda. Im kinda leaning towards fixing it but I have till friday to know the status and make the big decision. Any input would help alot, thanks.

Not sure of the market in Hawaii, but for ~5k you could pick up another early to mid 90s ES or LS. Picked up a nice 96 for about 6k almost 2 years ago here in TX. Check autotrader to see whats in your area before you decide to drop 5k into the car.

What in the hell...

1) How does that guy know there is rust on the valve
2) You can fix rust on a valve. Find something like rust-cutter & spray alot (It's thick so it's hard to atomize) into the intake port (Remove the upper intake & pull the EFI fuse) with the rusted valves for a min while the engine turns over.
Wait 5-10 min & turn it over. The rust-cutter will dissolve the rust (however that works) & make it so that when the valve crashes into the seat, it'll rub the rust off.

He's probably wanting to do *some* version of that.

Their fault... Tell the SOB to take the head off & fix the problem. You don't re-assemble an engine to have dead compression...

very nice, too bad were like the entire distance of the US and then some away!

checked today and I misunderstood the problem, its only one cylinder that wasnt up to par with the pressure (only like 60 psi) after that quick soak it went up to 70, so he try somemore overnight.

I don't know dude... The whole thing sounds like crap to me.
Those valves hit the seats pretty good. If there was anyhting on it, it'd get knocked off in a heart beat. (Which is one reason why none of these engines ever have loads of carbon build-up on the valves).

I would more expect the new head gasket is cheap crap & fubared, the head is fubared (not as likely), or the installation is fubared. But whatever he wants to do.

This just doesn't seem right at all to me... & this is his mistake, he should be paying for it.

How much would it cost you to get a car from the mainland to the island? that's what you have to take into consideration...

for 5 grand, yeah, you can find another fine lexus 2-3 years newer, at least here on the mainland. find out about the shipping cost. i'd bet that the choices would be less and the prices more for what you are looking for on the islands.

Also, listen to Phoenix!

You could've gotten a 30-50K motor and have everything in for about $1500.
