Coil overs

Coil overs
Can someone please tell me what exactly are coil overs and do they help with the installment of 20" wheels? I have a 92 ES and I'm planning on purchasing a set of black 20's. I seen the pros and cons of that size wheels, but I got the tires free and I like the filled wheel wells. I just need to know what other steps I need to make to minimize rubbing. Thanks.
Also, if anyone is interested in smoking their tail lights and head lights I have an inexpensive way of doing it. That 's for those that don't already know.

Coilovers are adjustable springs to change the ride height. They'll eliminate the rubbing, but they cost well over a grand. If you decide to go with regular Sprint or Eibach springs, for example, they'll only cost somewhere between 200 or 300. You'll just need to add a few spacers. They cost maybe $5 at AutoZone.
