Default Gas tank problem

Hey guys, my mom just got a "new" used 1999 ES300 a couple of weeks ago.

One problem though... I went to gas it up today and the nozzle kept doing the safety click, the thing that usually happens when the tank is full. Only problem is that the tank was far from full! had to hold the trigger slowly so it wouldn't keep clicking. Needless to say, I was at the pump for a long time trying to get to the $30.00 in the tank I paid for at the counter. What would have happened if I got a fill-up, when would I know if the tank is full? Also, I should add that at one point some gas even spilled out! I paused for a moment, closed the cap, and turned on the car to double check the gas level. And it was way below Full. Anyone got any idea on what the problem could be?

I've had the same thing happen before on other cars. I believe it's just an overly sensitive pump nozzle. I don't think there's any cause for concern, unless it happens every time you fill up.

Have the EVAP system checked out. A clogged charcoal filter may cause the tank not to vent properly.

Would yall think it would be dangerous if I didn't get it checked anytime soon?

Try a different gas pump. If it happens again, you know it's the car and not he pump.

I found a dirt dobber had built a nest in the large hose that vents the canister near the left rear where filler hose is located.

I also found the small vacuum line stopped up where it goes into the large vent hose. After cleaning I placed a screen over end of large vent hose.

I can even fill the gas tank as fast as the pump will pump, before cleaning I could not fill tank without pump kicking off
